A toilet whose water won't go down, or even rises, after flushing is one of the most common household emergencies in Hong Kong. Stay calm and don't keep flushing, or it may overflow. These steps can help with a minor blockage.
Self-Help Steps to Try First
- Stop flushing to avoid overflow.
- Cover the drain opening with a rubber plunger and pump firmly and vertically several times.
- Add warm, not boiling, water to help soften the blockage.
- Minor clogs from tissue or debris often clear this way.
Why Not Just Use Drain Cleaner?
Caustic drain cleaners are only marginally effective on hair and grease, and useless against solid blockages. Prolonged use corrodes pipes and grease traps, splashes are dangerous to skin and eyes, and they won't fix an odour problem.
If it stays blocked after self-help, or you notice back-smell or several drains clogging at once, the problem may be deeper or in the building's main drain. Call a professional promptly before it worsens.
